Every map has a zero point
Why does the line where longitude begins run through a London suburb? The zero point is not a law of nature — it is an agreement.
Every coordinate you see on a map has, in fact, been measured from somewhere. For latitude the starting line is natural: the Equator is set by the planet’s own geometry. But for longitude there is no natural beginning. The sphere is symmetrical in every direction; there is no special meridian in nature where you can say “this is zero.”
So someone had to decide.
Choosing a line
Throughout history, different civilizations placed the starting meridian in different spots. Some took the Canary Islands, some Paris, some Jerusalem or Alexandria. Because every map drew its own beginning, comparing coordinates between two countries’ maps was nearly impossible.
In 1884, delegates from around the world gathered in Washington and reached a compromise: the prime meridian would be the line passing through the Greenwich Observatory, near London.
A zero point is not discovered but agreed upon. Geography’s most objective-looking number is, in fact, a product of diplomacy.
Why Greenwich?
It was less a scientific necessity than a practical one. At the time, most of the world’s maritime trade already used Greenwich-referenced charts. Formalizing an existing habit was easier than forcing everyone onto a new system.
Today, when your phone tells you your position, the longitude value it gives still rests on that 1884 agreement. Satellites, atomic clocks, billions of devices — all of them lean on a shared decision made in a room a century and a half ago.
Maps do not show us the world as it is. They show us how we decided, together, to understand it.
